It may not feel like it’s time to think about Summer recreation, but we can all celebrate the re-opening of Brandy Creek Beach at Whiskeytown Lake. The National Park Service will open the Brandy Creek area to visitors on Friday May 31st. preparing the area for visitors was no easy feat following the devastation of the Carr Fire last year. More than 4000 hazard trees have been removed in park developed areas and along roads, and about 150 trees had to be removed in the Brandy Creek and Dry Creek developed areas alone. Visitors should be aware that there will be no lifeguards at Brandy Creek this Summer. They didn’t know they would even be able to open it, so there was no time to hire lifeguards. Also, because of erosion and sedimentation some areas of the lake that had been deep are now more shallow and there could be unexpected drop-offs. Information on all the recreational opportunities at Whiskeytown is available at the visitors center.
