A closure order has been issued for the forest surrounding a Siskiyou County fire. The Gap Fire started on the Klamath National Forest 20 miles west of Yreka Saturday night from an unknown cause. It’s burning in very heavy timber and the area has not burned in many years so there’s a large buildup of dead and downed material. Nine houses have been destroyed but all evacuations have been lifted. Highway 96 is open, though traffic is being escorted through with a pilot car. The cause is still undetermined. The latest estimate is nearly 19,000 acres with 10% containment. The forest closure includes part of the Pacific Crest Trail.
