LOS ANGELES (AP) – A former California lawmaker has been sentenced to a year in prison for helping his brother, a state senator, hide bribes he got for supporting legislation. The sentence Monday in Los Angeles federal court requires former Assemblyman Thomas Calderon to split the term between federal prison and home confinement. Calderon told the court he was remorseful and regretted his mistakes. He laundered money ex-Sen. Ron Calderon accepted from an undercover FBI agent in exchange for supporting tax credits for the film industry. The legislation never passed. Judge Christina Snyder says the crime was serious, and the sentence should serve as a deterrent for others. But she was also concerned because he has health problems. Prosecutors were seeking a year in prison, and a defense lawyer sought a probation term.
