Redding Police Officers acted in self defense when they shot a man at an East Redding cemetery three months ago, according to the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office. A report was released Wednesday about the incident on July 13th. Officers were called about 7:20AM after reports of a man shooting out windows of cars with a handgun near Oxford Road and Cascade Lane. Witnesses said the man had walked toward Lawncrest Cemetery. At about the same time a report came in about a window broken during a family disturbance in the neighborhood involving 24-year-old Patrick Michael Amen Jr., his mother and his grandmother. Officers found Amen lying in the tall weeds in a field behind the cemetery. He was lying on his back resting on an elbow and appeared to be smoking. When he was ordered to show his hands he looked at the seven officers but did not comply. Amen got up and started to walk away and officers could see he had a gun. He continued walking and ignoring orders to drop the gun as the officers closed in from different directions. When Amen allegedly raised his arm and pointed the gun toward an officer about 20 yards away, six of the officers fired on him. The gun was a pellet gun that looks just like a Sig Sauer P226. When asked later why he pulled out the gun amen allegedly said “So I’d get shot”. Amen has apparently recovered from his bullet wounds. The D.A.’s Office has cleared the officers of wrongdoing. Amen has a preliminary hearing set for Wednesday.
