A 38-year-old and an 8-year-old from Anderson were injured when their vintage Volswagon van crashed on the freeway Friday evening. There had been a previous crash a little before 6PM, causing traffic to slow way down on southbound Interstate 5 a little south of Knighton Road. When a tractor-trailer slowed down ahead of the 1972 Volskwagon Microbus, David Wideman didn’t notice in time. He hit the brakes but lost control and slid into the rear of the big rig. The Volkswagon then tipped over onto its passenger side, blocking the slow lane. An off-duty EMT and an off-duty firefighter were there immediately to help Wideman, who suffered major injuries. The young boy in the passenger seat had minor injuries. Both were wearing their seatbelts and the CHP said the crash was not caused by drugs, alcohol, or distracted driving.
