A Modoc County Sheriff’s Deputy killed in the line of duty Wednesday morning leaves behind a large family and many friends. The body of Deputy Jack Hopkins was transported to Redding Thursday in a solemn procession down Highway 299. The 31-year-old deputy was shot while responding to a call for a family assault in rural Modoc County about 8 miles south of Alturas. He was alone when he arrived, according to Alturas area CHP Public Information Officer Kristen Wilburn. Hopkins confronted the suspect, 47-year-old Jack Lee Breiner, who allegedly shot the deputy and killed him instantly. Breiner drove away from the scene and was intercepted on a nearby road by Sheriff Mike Poindexter. Breiner reportedly shot at the Sheriff and was wounded in the exchange of gunfire and soon taken into custody. Breiner was treated at the scene for his gunshot wound and transported to a Redding hospital. He is expected to recover. Sheriff Poindexter also had minor wounds. An enormous volume of help was offered from as far away as the L.A.P.D. Various neighboring agencies are handling the investigation. Deputy Hopkins started with the Modoc County Sheriff’s Department last year after working for the Alturas Police Department. Jack Hopkins was raised in Montague in Siskiyou County along with five siblings.
