Shasta County District Attorney Steve Carlton has announced that he’ll step down at the end of the year. The 73-year-old prosecutor has been D.A. since he defeated Jerry Benito in a rough contest in 2010. Carlton also had held the D.A. position for 10 years starting in 1981, when he was appointed following the removal of Will Hawes. Carlton first started practicing law in 1969 as a defense attorney. There are two years remaining in the term, which will be served by whomever is appointed by the board of supervisors. Carlton will recommend Chief Deputy D.A. Stephanie Bridgett as his replacement.
