A public memorial service will be held Saturday for a fallen Modoc County Sheriff’s Deputy. 31-year-old Deputy Jack Hopkins was shot October 19th while responding to a family disturbance call south of Alturas. He was alone when he arrived and was allegedly shot dead by 47-year-old Jack Breiner. When Breiner tried to flee he was intercepted by Sheriff Mike Poindexter, who wounded him in a gunfight before his capture. The Modoc County District Attorney is seeking the death penalty. Breiner has pleaded not guilty. Jack Hopkins was raised in a large family on a cattle ranch in the Shasta Valley in Siskiyou County. In 2001 he won a world championship karate title. After graduating from the police academy at Butte College Jack worked for the Alturas Police Department before getting a job last year as a Modoc County Sheriff Deputy. Services will be held Saturday at 1 O’clock at the Siskiyou Golden Fairgrounds in Yreka. A large crowd is expected so people should arrive early.
