A Redding man is being sought to face a second degree murder charge from a head-on collision on Highway 44. The devastating crash happened on the afternoon of August 3rd just west of South Cow Creek Road 4 miles east of Millville. 36-year-old Matthew David Castaneda was driving a 2007 Chevy Malibu westbound passing cars but he misjudged it and ran out of room, according to the CHP. Castaneda crashed head-on into a Mini Cooper driven by 73-year-old Ellen Berblinger, who is still recovering from her once-critical injuries. her passenger, 81-year-old Evelyn Blake, died of her injuries 10 days later. Castaneda was hospitalized with moderate injuries. The D.A.’s Office says Castaneda had a blood-alcohol level of .11% and admitted to recent use of methamphetamine, marijuana and hydrocodone. Castaneda now has multiple felony warrants out for his arrest.
