Chase Covers 2 Counties Before Suspects Arrested

When somebody stole a fortune in marijuana from a remote area of Trinity County, the owner chased them all the way to Igo while dealing with spotty cell phone coverage, according to the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office. They got a 9-1-1 call at 10:45AM Monday morning from a cell phone near Ruth in the southern part of the county. They said a burglary was in progress on Souza Road but then the call was cut off. The dispatcher kept calling back and a few minutes later the caller got through and gave a description of the suspect vehicle before the call was lost again. Deputies headed toward the area as the dispatcher continued trying to get a call through. A report then came in of 2 vehicles chasing each other with guns. Help was requested from the CHP and the Forest Service. More witnesses reported the vehicles at high speed eastbound on Wild/Mad Road. Deputies tried to intercept them but then heard that they had been seen on Highway 36 passing Harrison Gulch headed toward Platina Road. A CHP pilot spotted the vehicles in the Igo area at 1:20PM headed back to the west on Platina Road. A Forest Service Officer disabled the suspect vehicle and the chase ended. The passenger, 43-year-old Richard Hall, tried to run but was caught and arrested along with the driver, 41-year-old Tommy Horton. They had apparently taken 44 pounds of processed marijuana bud from the victim’s shed. No guns were found.
