A group of former Shasta High School students is demanding that administration take action about a growing atmosphere of intolerance they say is evidenced by an incident last week. Following the presidential election victory of Donald Trump, a student at Shasta High produced and handed out deportation notices to Hispanic students. The alumni group, in an open letter to school administrators, says the action was deplorable and harmful to targets of prejudice, including students who are quote-“Black, Latino/Latina, Asian, Native, and mixed race, students who are Muslim and Jewish, students who are undocumented, disabled, queer and transgender.” The letter says disciplinary action toward the student who made the deportation notices is not enough. It says a stronger culture of compassion and empathy across campus needs to be built in order to ensure the health and safety of the student body. Well over a thousand people have signed the letter online.
