The main road to the coast is shut down again, and this time it’ll be a while. Highway 299 is completely blocked at Big French Creek a few miles west of Big Bar in Trinity County. A rock slide has blocked one lane for most of the year and the entire highway has become blocked several times. This time Cal-Trans estimates 5000 cubic yards of dirt and rock has come down the mountain, again making the highway impassable. More material continues to slide down the unstable mountainside, so Cal-Trans has decided to keep the highway closed until at least the middle of next week so proper repairs can be made. Travelers are advised to use Highway 36.
