Cal-Trans paid to have a bridge demolished. Unfortunately, after the detonation of around 700 pounds of C-4 type explosives, they still have part of a bridge. So went Tuesday’s planned destruction of the Old Antlers Bridge in Lakehead. The job was contracted to Dykon Blasting Corporation and at 9 O’clock Tuesday morning the charges were fired and the bridge came tumbling down… at least most of it. The two southernmost spans of the bridge remained standing. Apparently none of the explosives failed so there must have been a miscalculation in what it would take to defeat the concrete pillars and steel girders manufactured back in the early 40’s. Now various options are being considered, according to project manager Eric Akana. A very large structure is still standing with uncertain stability, so any option carries serious dangers. The freeway was halted for longer than expected as engineers gathered on the new bridge to take a good look at what remained of the old bridge. The lake is being swept of debris and cranes will pluck large pieces from the bottom as divers attach cables. The concrete pillars will be taken down piece by piece.
