A 38-year-old Palo Cedro man has been given a life sentence for killing a Shingletown man in a head-on crash on Highway 44 near Millville. On the night of October 24th of 2014 Jason Harsin had left a relative’s home in Anderson after drinking 14 beers. He was westbound on Highway 44 just west of Millville Plains Road at a very high speed when he came around a gradual right-hand curve and allowed his Ford pickup to cross into the oncoming lane directly into the path of a Subaru Impreza driven by 68-year-old Richard Lee Bates. He was declared dead at the scene. Harsin was belligerent and combative with medical personnel and others at the scene who were trying to help him. Several hours after the crash he still had a blood alcohol level of .21%. Harsin had a previous conviction for wet reckless for a rollover in 2000. At Monday’s sentencing hearing there was testimony from Bates’ son and his wife of 45 years. Harsin was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.
