A physical fitness park west of Redding is dedicated to a smokejumper from Redding who died in the line of duty 3-and-a-half years ago. In the Summer of 2013 Luke Sheehy, a former BLM Hotshot Firefighter, was working as a U.S. Forest Service smokejumper when he died while fighting a fire in the Warner Mountains near Alturas. The Sheehy Memorial Fitness Park has now been completed in the BLM’s Swasey Recreation area. It features exercise stations along a meandering forest trail. It also connects to an extensive recreational trail network. The park will open to the public after an official dedication ceremony this Saturday at 11AM. The parking area is on Swasey Drive about a mile from Placer Road.
