The Department of Defense has finally identified the remains of a sailor from Redding who died in the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was already known that 25-year-old Vernon Neslie Grow was among the 400 dead sailors whose remains were recovered from the capsized U.S.S. Oklahoma. That was 75 years ago and it was not possible to tell the dead men apart so eventually nearly all of them were interred together at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu. The remains were exhumed in 2015 and it was only through advances in DNA science that forensic investigators were able to isolate Grow from his shipmates. On Friday Grow will be re-interred at the same cemetery with full military honors. Last week Governor Jerry Brown ordered capitol flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of Vernon Grow, who attended Shasta High School before joining the Navy.
