RPD To Assign Extra Officers For Motorcycle Safety

As many as 40,000 people died in traffic collisions last year, according to preliminary federal data. That’s a 6% increase from 2015 and a 14% increase from 2014. It’s been 53 years since a statistical spike like that has been seen. As distracted driving month and its grant-funded cell phone enforcement wraps up, Redding Police will now be keeping an eye on motorcycles. the RPD will be doing a specialized motorcycle safety enforcement operation during May, with extra officers patrolling areas where motorcyclists frequently ride, and where crashes frequently happen. They’ll be looking for not only motorcyclist violators, but also automobile drivers who put riders at risk. Motorcycle fatalities in California dropped 37% from 2008 to 2010 but by 2015 deaths had spiked back up by 31%. The RPD wants to send those statistics back the other way again.
