A Shasta County Jail inmate has died of an unknown cause. At 4:45PM Thursday afternoon, jail staff found 59-year-old James Saldana alone in his cell and unresponsive. Efforts were made to revive him and he was taken by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead early Friday morning. An investigation is underway and deputies have ruled out any signs of foul play. An autopsy will be done this week to try and determine a cause of death.
