Anti-Crime Group Seeks Donations To Fund NPU

A Redding anti-crime business group will hold a meeting about the neighborhood policing unit Tuesday afternoon. The merchants crime watch will hear an introduction of the NPU from Redding Police Sergeant Walt Bullington, who heads up the 6-officer unit. During its brief existence the NPU has made hundreds of arrests and seized a large quantity of drugs and weapons. They also have helped shut down some problematic motels. Despite it’s effectiveness, the NPU was running on temporary funding and had been set to expire July 1st. That prompted Bethel Church to donate a Half-Million Dollars and launch a fundraising campaign to fully fund the unit for 2 years. They’ve established a website at reddingpublicsafety.com. Cory McCandless will provide an update on the efforts to bring in the additional $740,000 that’s needed. There will also be a time for open discussion at the meeting, which is at 2 O’clock Tuesday at the Red Lion on Hilltop.
