A dispute between two families became violent in Cottonwood very early Friday morning. The Carroll family, Vanessa and Michael and their 25-year-old son Anthony, deliver newspapers in the early morning. Over the past several weeks they’ve been accused of stealing mail by people identifying themselves as the “Cottonwood Community Watch”, including Jason Wicks and his 18-year-old son Jeffery. The Carrolls explained that their job delivering newspapers is why they are frequently around mailboxes in the wee hours. Vanessa says that for weeks, it seemed like everywhere they went in Cottonwood, they were being trailed by the Wicks. A little before 1AM Friday, the Carrolls were in front of a Main Street business sorting their papers before delivery, and the Wicks were parked nearby staring at them when Anthony Carroll made a hand gesture toward the Wicks. That’s when the family was allegedly attacked. Jason Wicks reportedly hit Michael Carroll in the head 4 times with a metal flashlight, knocking him out. Anthony Carroll had a bleeding injury to his temple and Vanessa Carroll suffered a hand injury while trying to break up the fight. Deputies say the Wicks men later admitted to fighting with the Carrolls. Jason and Jeffery Wicks were determined to be the primary aggressors and they were both booked into jail. The sheriff’s office says the so-called “Cottonwood Community Watch” has no affiliation with any law enforcement agency.
