After spending this weekend barbecuing and boating and having fun, Monday may be best spent remembering the reason for the holiday. A number of Memorial Day ceremonies are planned for Monday and Tuesday, including at several cemeteries. Likely the most well attended event Monday will begin at 5:55PM at the Northern California Veterans Cemetery in Igo, with a fly-over by the California Highway Patrol, and music by the Foothill High School band and Jefferson Pipe Band. Rob Burroughs will M.C. and speakers will include Siskiyou County Sheriff Jon Lopey. The official City of Redding and Shasta County Veterans Memorial Day Service will be Tuesday at 11AM at the Veterans Memorial Grove in front of the Civic Auditorium. Many veterans groups will attend and those who wish to lay wreaths will be invited to participate. Memorial Day has its roots in 1868 as a remembrance of Civil War dead. While Veterans Day in November is to honor all military personnel, Memorial Day is generally reserved for the fallen.
