Council Will Discuss Trespassing Ordinance

The Redding City Council will be asked to approve a change in the trespassing ordinance that makes it easier for business owners to eject people from their properties. The staff report says current state law is deficient because it only allows people to be kicked out of a business if they entered with ill intentions. There’s no allowance for expelling loiterers or for the expulsion of of people who have been kicked out before and then return. The new ordinance would require people to leave the premises if the owner asks them to leave, based on the owner’s established rules for the property. There are some provisions in the ordinance to try to keep it out of the courts, including exemptions for activities such as labor picketing and exercise of free speech.

Also at Tuesday evening’s meeting, the council will officially appoint Barry Tippin as the new City Manager.
