Experts estimate that for every case of elder abuse reported, there are another 4 that go unreported. That’s unsettling considering that last year 975 cases were reported in Shasta County. Throughout the state there are an estimated 50,000 unreported cases every month. Shasta County Health and Human Services wants people to recognize the signs of elder abuse. They include lack of adequate food, poor personal hygiene, unexplained bruises and other injuries, ripped or bloodied clothing, and unexplained purchases by the primary caregiver. Shasta County has a 24 hour hotline to report possible elder abuse at 225-5798.
