Boy Seeking Donations To Continue Mission To Honor Veterans

A local boy was featured a few nights ago on the national CBS Evening News. 11-year-old Preston Sharp has found his mission- and his passion- in cemeteries pulling weeds and planting flags around the graves of military veterans. On Veterans Day in 2015 the Columbia School student went with his mother to visit his grandfather’s grave at McDonald’s Cemetery on Continental Street. Preston was appalled to see that many of the veterans’ graves had no flags or flowers to honor them. It really bothered him and he couldn’t let it go, so he decided to do something about it. He started taking on odd jobs and soliciting donations to purchase thousands of small American flags. By Memorial Day of last year, there were 4,000 of the flags adorning the graves, and Preston makes it a weekly labor of love. He’s expanded to other cemeteries and he and his volunteer followers have left his mark of honor on approximately 23,000 Northstate veterans graves. Preston’s crusade continues to expand, and he’s got an online Gofundme Crowdfunding campaign. He’s brought in $27,000 toward his goal of $50,000.
