Two Campers Found Dead In Trinity County

A camping trip became a tragedy for three people in the Trinity Alps Wilderness who apparently were not prepared for the conditions. The trio headed to Northern Trinity County last Monday the Fifth to camp. Family members still had not heard from them a week later so on Monday they called the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office and asked them to go look for their missing relatives. They provided a description of the vehicle and the campground they thought they had gone to, but when a deputy checked he found no sign of the campers. An attempt by the deputy to use the location feature on the campers’ cell phones failed to get any information, so deputies fanned out across Northern Trinity County to check all the trailheads. Early Tuesday morning the vehicle was found unoccupied at a trailhead in the wilderness.  There was no sign of the missing people and no answer when the deputy used a loudspeaker to hail them. It was still dark so at first light a search and rescue operation was launched. The missing campers were found, but two of them were dead, apparently from exposure.  The survivor, a juvenile, was airlifted out of the wilderness to a hospital and is listed in stable condition.
