A houseboat went up in flames on Lake Shasta Thursday night. The Mondorf family of Happy Valley were having fun on a rented houseboat from Shasta Marina. A little after 9 O’clock they were tied to the shore in the Big Backbone Inlet. The family was playing board games in the boat’s dining room when Katherine Mondorf noticed smoke coming from next to the refrigerator. She opened a cabinet door and flames came shooting through the wall of the pantry. A family friend on the boat used a fire extinguisher to try and put the fire out but was unsuccessful. Everybody loaded into their ski boats and escaped as the fire spread throughout the boat. By the time Shasta County Sheriff’s Boating Deputies and Cal-Fire got there the boat was fully engulfed in flames and the fire had spread to the vegetation, burning about a half acre.
