SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation is indicating it may be months or more away from ruling on Gov. Jerry Brown’s plan to build two giant water tunnels for California. That’s after federal wildlife and fisheries agencies gave their approval to Brown’s $16 billion water project on Monday. Brown wants to re-engineer California’s water system by shunting part of the largest river, the Sacramento, into four-story-high pipes. Supporters say the project would mean more reliable water for millions in the San Francisco Bay Area and Central and Southern California. Opponents say the project would devastate California’s historic Delta towns and native species. Bureau of Reclamation regional director David Murillo says his agency will make its ruling after California decides key details, including how much water the tunnels could take.
