Job Skills for Cons Program Gets Boost

A partnership between Shasta College and various Shasta County agencies has gotten a boost to help jail inmates improve their employable skills. The STEP-UP” program allows students who are either in custody or on probation to seek certificates in business administration, heavy equipment operations, fire technology, welding, and auto technology. The program was established in 2013 by Sheriff Tom Bosenko and Eva Jimenez of Shasta College to provide low risk offenders assistance in the hopes that they’ll become productive and law-abiding members of the community. There are now many success stories to prove the program’s worth. A local committee has just approved a grant for the program of $250,000 a year for the next two years, increasing the capacity of the program by 50 students.
