Teen Rescued After Heat Related Illness Near Castle Crags

A tricky retrieval had to be made by Shasta County Search and Rescue when the heat got the better of a teenager hiking near Castle Crags. Tuesday night shortly before sunset Dave Swanson called 9-1-1 to report that his grandson, 17-year-old Byron Fuller, was experiencing a heat-related injury and he would need help getting out of the wilderness. Fuller was hiking and camping the Pacific Crest Trail and Swanson described his location as about 3 miles north of Castle Crags where a creek crosses the trail. There are two locations that fit that description and another just over the county line in Siskiyou County. At 10 O’clock, while search and rescue was responding, there was a personal locating beacon activated in that same area but it described a different situation. Both Shasta and Siskiyou County Search and Rescue Teams worked together and found Fuller, who was the only one who needed help. He was reunited with his grandfather, who took him to a hospital.
