New lightning fires are being discovered in Modoc and Siskiyou Counties. Seven more were found Wednesday in Modoc, adding to the dozens of fires already burning, mostly in the Devil’s Garden and Warner Mountain Districts. They total about 2000 acres, with 15% overall containment. Meanwhile a fire near Orleans in the Six Rivers National Forest is nearly contained after burning 319 acres of heavy timber. The low-intensity island fire is still burning in the Marble Mountains 14 miles west of Etna. It started with a lightning strike June 25th and has been allowed to run its course with the Forest Service monitoring its progress. It covers almost 1300 acres of forest with no known fire history, but surrounded on three sides by previously burned areas. It’s growing 20 to 50 acres a day.
