A man is dead after a dispute over parking in a neighborhood northeast of Redding. At around 7:30PM Tuesday night a 44-year-old woman was with a 49-year-old man in a Ford Expedition. They drove up to City View Drive to sit and watch the city lights as they talked. They parked in a turnout off of a driveway about 50 yards from the home of James Johnson. Although the couple was not causing a disturbance, Johnson told them they were on private property and would have to leave. The driver argued with Johnson, saying he believed it to be public property and a legal place to park. The argument continued until the driver started to pull away. Johnson says he tried to run him over and struck him in the stomach with the side view mirror. Johnson then turned and broke the rear driver’s side window with his flashlight. The driver stepped from the SUV and a fight broke out during which Johnson was placed in a choke hold. He got free by biting the other man on his arm. Johnson then ran back to his house and armed himself with his 12 gauge shotgun. The other man had gotten back in his SUV and he drove fast up the driveway to where Johnson was standing with his wife and another man. The SUV came skidding to a stop in the gravel a few feet from the three people, then backed down the driveway and again came rushing back up. When it was 10 to 20 feet away Johnson fired the shotgun, which was loaded with birdshot. It struck the driver in the neck and face, killing him. The passenger, identified as Barbara Baldo, was not injured. She was questioned and released. Johnson was also released after giving a statement.
