SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – A cardiologist who charged patients a bogus $100 “DEA Fee” and prescribed thousands of opioid pills at a time has been sentenced to nearly 4 { years in federal prison. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sacramento said 67-year-old Nicholas Capos Jr. of Yuba City was sentenced Thursday for prescribing patients oxycodone and methadone without conducting physical examinations. Prosecutors say the amounts were clearly intended for abuse and resale, endangering patients and the public. Capos, who no longer has a license, prescribed one patient 2,640 hydrocodone pills in 28 days. The patient would have had to take nearly 100 pills a day at that rate. He prescribed another patient 2,100 oxycodone pills over 50 days – a rate of 42 pills per day.
