Former Shasta County District Attorney McGregor Scott, now a U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District, has joined forces with the current D.A.Stephanie Bridgett to announce a partnership that should improve public safety. At a press conference Thursday Scott was joined by Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko and Redding Police Chief Roger Moore. Scott said that “Project Safe Neighborhoods” will free up jail space by taking the worst of the worst offenders, especially those with illegal firearms, and prosecuting them at the federal level. Under California law, many felons, and drug offenders are eligible for early release, but that’s not the case under federal law. If these offenders are prosecuted in a federal court, that could free up space in California prisons, and local jails, thus keeping many felons off the streets. Project Safe Neighborhoods was launched in 2001, but fell victim to budget cuts. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced last year that he is renewing the program. The decision to prosecute offenders locally or at the federal level will be made on a case by case basis.
