Volunteers Will Build Fish Habitats In Sacramento River

Volunteers will be building fish habitat in an area of the Sacramento River in Redding Thursday and Friday. Trout Unlimited is coordinating with State Fish and Wildlife, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the City of Redding. The work is being done in and around Kutras Lake, which is a nearly enclosed part of the river off Park Marina Drive where juvenile Salmon and Trout Smolts concentrate year-round. They fall victim to larger fish, so they need areas to take cover. The project involves building piles of woody debris and anchoring them to sandbags filled with river rock. The specific goal of the project is to help sustain the endangered Winter Run Chinook Salmon.
