A Downtown Redding street might be eliminated in the interest of bicycles. The Diestelhorst-To-Downtown Non-Motorized Improvement Project calls for the permanent closure of a portion of Riverside Drive. Construction would begin next summer and would create a bike and walking path that links Court Street to Center Street. The city council will address the proposal at Tuesday’s meeting. They have some alternatives, including making the street one-way and one lane and splitting the other side for bicycles. They also could choose to make the path beside the road instead, but that would add to the cost. The current budget for the project is $2.6 Million, mostly from state transportation funds.
