A Los Molinos man is going to prison for a fight with deputies that put him in the hospital. Early on the morning of April 2nd, Mark Candreva heard a noise outside his Hooker Creek Road home and when he looked out he saw 25-year-old Ethan Winter ranting incoherently. When Candreva opened the window, Winter punched his hand and grabbed a pocketknife from the window sill before getting into Candreva’s pickup truck, which contained a shotgun and ammunition. Winter was still in the truck when Tehama County Deputies arrived. He loaded the shotgun, then pointed it out the driver’s side window toward the deputies, challenging them to shoot him. After about 30 minutes of negotiations, an opportunity arose when Winter adjusted his position and the shotgun got jammed between the steering wheel and the center console. Deputies jumped at the chance, quickly emptying and entire can of pepper spray through a crack in the window. They got the truck door open and seized the shotgun, but Winter was more resistant than ever. When Deputies tased him, he jumped from the truck and rushed the deputies. Winter was then struck three times with shotgun-fired beanbag rounds, but they failed to knock him down. He was struck numerous times with a baton and tasers as he continued to fight and tried to take guns from two of the deputies. It eventually took seven deputies to get Winter under control. Two of them sustained minor injuries. Winter needed surgery for one of his hands and was kept hospitalized for a few days for observation. He was found to be under the influence of Methamphetamine, alcohol, and Psilocybin Mushrooms. He has plenty of time to dry out, as he’s been sentenced to 7 years 4 months in state prison.
