A man who was in a shootout with a Tehama County Sheriff’s Deputy on Saturday evening in Los Molinos killed himself on Interstate Five, and did not die of injuries from the crash, according to sheriff’s office. An autopsy was conducted on 29-year-old Jose Alfredo Barajas Monday and the cause of death has been determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Barajas was declared dead after crashing his vehicle on northbound Interstate Five in the Hooker Creek Area. The coroner says that Barajas was found with several bullet wounds that he sustained during the shoot out. Saturday evening a deputy was checking on a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of the Dollar General Store when Barajas opened fire on him. Barajas struck the deputy, as well as a woman who is a non-sworn employee of the sheriff’s department who was accompanying the deputy on a ride-along. Barajas then fled onto Highway 99 and eventually crashed near Hooker Creek. Both the deputy and the other employee are still recovering.
