Shasta County is saying goodbye to its last Pearl Harbor survivor. The Japanese surprise attack on December 7th of 1941 killed more than 2400 Americans, sank 18 of our ships, destroyed 188 of our airplanes and launched America into World War Two. There were once more than 90 members of the Shasta County Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. Mike Sotak passed away at the age of 94 in 2016 and Art Wynant died at his Redding home in July of last year at the age of 96. Mel Fisher moved to Southern California earlier this year. He recently passed away at the age of 97. A funeral service will be held for Mel Fisher this Friday at the Northern California Veterans Cemetery in Igo. Following the services a reception will be held at the Jones Valley Fire Hall on Ravine Road, where Fisher was the first fire chief.
