LOS ANGELES (AP) – Mudslides, debris flows and flash flooding are occurring in Southern California mountains and deserts as thunderstorms move through the region. The San Bernardino County Fire Department tweets that numerous vehicles are stranded Thursday afternoon in Lucerne Valley due to significant flow of water and debris on State Route 18. The department adds that no rescues are required. Mud and debris have also closed Valley of the Falls Drive in the San Bernardino National Forest. The National Weather Service has issued severe thunderstorm and flash-flood warnings in the region. Thunderstorms spawned by monsoonal flow have shattered some weather records this week. In Campo in southeastern San Diego County, no rain had ever been recorded on a July 11 until this year, when 1.18 inches fell. In Palm Springs, Wednesday’s 1.08 inches of rain destroyed the old record of 0.03 inch set in 1999.
