Woman Killed By Falling Log Near Lake Shasta

A Redding woman died over the weekend at Lake Shasta when her friends accidentally rolled a log over her. Sunday evening, the 37-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, was with Timothy Williams, John Hoeppner, Caroline Lewis, Christopher Wynia, Nicolas Lendman and Darcey Prior on Woods Island in the Jones Valley area. They landed their boat on the shore and Wynia and Lendman climbed to the top of the embankment to try and roll a large log down to the water. The victim and Lewis started up the hill to help them, climbing well away from the apparent path of the log, but when it came loose and barreled down the steep hillside, it struck stumps and large rocks along the way, which diverted its path off to the side. Wynia and Lendman shouted at the others to move and Lewis was able to get out of the way, but the victim could not and the log rolled over her. One of the men rode away on a personal watercraft to get help. He found Boating Safety Deputies near the Pit River Bridge and led them back to Woods Island. People who had been nearby were already giving the woman CPR. Deputies took over and put her on their boat, taking her to Mariners Point to await a medical helicopter. EMT’s arrived first and declared the woman deceased. Her name will be released when family is notified. The sheriff’s office is investigating, and they say it’s unknown if alcohol played a factor in the death.
