Nineteen cars burned up at an auto dismantler on Viking Way Sunday morning. A little before 9AM Redding Firefighters responded to reports of a thick black plume of smoke rising from the yard of LKQ. While en route, the first crews could see the smoke building and called for a bigger response. They arrived to find about 8 cars fully involved, and by the time hoselines were set up to reach the flames, the wind had carried the blaze and consumed 19 vehicles. It took about 4 hours to get everything extinguished. The value of the damage is estimated at up to $125,000. The cause was a failure of some sort of equipment or heat source.
