Everybody enjoys a three day weekend, but it’s important to remember that it’s not just a day off, it’s a day to remember those who have fallen while defending our country. A number of Memorial Day ceremonies are planned for Monday, including at several cemeteries. Likely the most well attended ceremony Monday will begin at 5:55PM at the Northern California Veterans Cemetery in Igo, where more than 7500 veterans and their spouses have been laid to rest. A ceremony at Anderson Cemetery will take place at 11AM Monday, with many flags and wreaths to mark the route from the Downtown Veterans Walk of Honor to the cemetery. For traditionalists, the official city of Redding and Shasta County Veterans Memorial Day Service will be Thursday at 11AM at the Veterans Memorial Grove in front of the Civic Auditorium. Many veterans groups will attend and those who wish to lay wreaths will be invited to participate. Memorial Day has its roots in 1868 as a remembrance of Civil War dead.
