The Forest Service is planning to do some widespread prescribed burning in the Trinity Alps Wilderness. A total of 19,000 acres are set to be torched to reduce fuel loads and cut the severity of future wildfires. Enormous fires have scorched the landscape over the years as a result of decades of aggressively suppressing naturally occurring lightning fires, which doesn’t allow the natural thinning of the forest. The dense vegetation means much more intense fires for the future. The prescribed burning campaign being planned is subject to a 30 day public comment period on the environmental assessment.
