Supervisors Will Discuss Approving Ballot Measure For County-Wide Sales Tax

The Shasta County Board of Supervisors will vote on Tuesday whether to ask voters to approve a county-wide sales tax. The specific transactions and use tax would be earmarked for law enforcement and jail beds, seeking to eliminate the impression that a revolving door at the Shasta County Jail provides inadequate deterrent for criminals. A specific tax requires a 2-thirds approval from voters. The City of Redding has attempted to pass public safety sales tax measures twice in the past decade, but failed. There’s a general agreement among the board of supervisors that the key to the success of such a proposal is a very clear plan that provides transparency and therefore fosters trust among voters. A two-thirds approval by the board on Tuesday would place the measure on the March 3rd ballot.
