Siskiyou Sheriff Bucks Trend With Cannabis Eradication Efforts

Most of California is adjusting to the new reality of legal recreational cannabis, and reaping the benefits of tax and fee revenue that comes with a legitimate industry. Siskiyou County continues to fight what Sheriff Jon Lopey says last year could have been an industry worth up to 600 Million Dollars. At the Sheriff’s request, the Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors has extended for another year their declaration of a local state of emergency in support of the cannabis eradication efforts of the sheriff’s department. The seizures of cannabis last year doubled those of the previous year, with a total of 61,600 growing plants and nearly 18,000 pounds of processed bud. That was the result of 154 search warrants that led to 17 arrests and the seizure of nearly $30,000. Sheriff Lopey estimates that 1,500 to 2,00 illegal cultivation sites are still in operation in the county.
