Man Sentenced To Life In Prison For Killing Centerville Attorney

The killer of a local attorney has been given a possible life sentence after pleading guilty. 31-year-old Kody Smith entered pleas last week for the first degree murder of Richard Maxion, with a 10 year firearm enhancement, plus two misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty for killing Maxion’s dogs. On February 12th of last year Smith called 911 to say he had shot a man and two dogs inside a house on Equestrian Drive off Placer Road in the Centerville area west of Redding. Arriving deputies detained Smith and found the 69-year-old lawyer in the living room with his two dead dogs. Maxion was taken to a hospital, but died of the gunshot wounds. Smith had been living at the home for about 2 months. He was sentenced to 35 years to life in state prison. If he ever gets out he’ll be on parole for the rest of his life.
