Unemployment Rate Hits 16.3% In California

The unemployment numbers are still pretty dismal. Last month Shasta County had a rate of 13.1% compared to a rate of 4% a year earlier. There were job losses in nearly every sector of the economy. Especially hard hit were hotels and restaurants, with losses of around 45% from the previous May. The only increase was in the construction industry, with a gain of 2.6%. Tehama County had a 12.6% rate. it was 10.7% in Trinity County and 13.5% in Siskiyou County. California showed a statewide rate of 16.3% last month, the highest since the Great Depression. Nationally, 38 states saw their unemployment rates decline last month as officials loosened their stay-at-home orders for the Coronavirus. California has lost more than 2.2 million jobs since May of last year, more than any other state. The state has paid more than $30 Billion in unemployment benefits since the start of the pandemic.
