State Prison Inmates Are Being Released Early Into Shasta County

Dozens of prison inmates are coming to Shasta County early. The Department of Corrections is releasing inmates who have less than 6 months left on their sentences if they meet a few criteria. Their current sentence must not fit the state’s narrow definition of a “violent crime”, they can’t be sex offenders, they can’t have a high risk of violence assessment, they must have housing plans and they must test negative for COVID-19. The releases began on July 1st, with Shasta County likely receiving 41 post release community supervision inmates, according to the probation department.
