Several active lightning fires on the Modoc/Siskiyou County line have expanded by around 30,000 acres overnight due to erratic winds. The Caldwell Fire and some smaller fires near Canby have burned a combined total of well over 46,000 acres, with 20% overall containment. The Medicine Lake Recreation Area and Lava Beds National Monument are both closed. The Tulelake area is threatened, prompting further evacuations. One structure and three outbuildings have been destroyed. Firefighters are working in dangerous red flag conditions Monday.
Activity has been subsiding on the Hog Fire about 5 miles west of Susanville. It’s burned 9,545 acres, now with 60% containment. Many residents have been allowed to return to their homes. The area west of Highway 44 and Highway 36 remains under evacuation orders.
Many evacuations remain in effect for the Gold Fire south of Adin. It’s burned 21,870 acres, now with 55% containment. Many homes and ranches are threatened. Two firefighters suffered serious burns last week when they were overtaken by the flames and had to deploy an emergency shelter. Fire managers are very concerned about increasing thunderheads rolling in.
