Crews have reported good progress on battling the Stump Fire in Eastern Tehama County, using meadows and roads as fire breaks. The Stump Fire started Saturday afternoon near the cross of Highway 36 and Highway 172 in the Lassen National Forest near Childs Meadows. No structures are threatened. The latest estimate is 700 acres, with 35% containment. There are safety issues, with firefighters endangered by rolling trees and boulders in the steep terrain. The Forest Service is asking that drivers going by refrain from slowing down to take pictures because it presents an unnecessary hazard.
